parent participation vs. regulations

Apparently Ms. Thompson was concerned about the regulations regarding holding a second school council meeting during the month because of the lack of advanced notice to parents interested in participating.

Strangely enough, her solution was to present the material in question privately to the school council executive, with no one else hearing it, not even the normally notified body of school council.

Yet another instance wherein parent participation is obviously not the real goal of this school administration.

French Culture

Last year, when all the students currently at Munn's were at Sunningdale, there was a strong French cultural theme going throughout the school.

We seem to have lost a good bit of this culture in the transition to Munn's.

I'm not sure why this is, but it has been noticed by several school council members too - if you wish to get in touch with them about this, leave a comment here, and I'll try to arrange it.

Hijacking of the purpose of School Council

Carol Thompson still insists that the purpose of school council is other than oversight of her and her actions.  Her current favorite red herring seems to be her "School Effectiveness Plan" - she has told council that, in her opinion, the purpose of school council is to support it.

This is, of course, completely at odds with provincial and board statements as to the purpose of school council.  School Council's job is more to look at this plan, and decide whether or not it is a good one, and where it can be improved.

Once again, Ms. Thompson is showing a consistent effort to disable and ignore any parent oversight of her actions.

Accountability

Ontario regulation 612 states, “The purpose of school councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”  Unfortunately, Munn’s Public School in particular has been saddled with an administration that tries its best to thwart this purpose, not just with school council, but in general.  In the three months since the school opened, Carol Thompson has done everything she could do avoid her responsibilities in this regard.  The general attitude coming from the school has been, the less information given to parents the better.  She has treated school council as a private club, open only to select (and arbitrary) members.  She has instituted rules that reduce the information going to the general parent body.  She has introduced rules that delay the dissemination of information to non-council parents until it is no longer relevant.  She has even stated to me on one occasion that in her opinion, that school council is not there to provide accountability at all, but merely as a body to which she has to relay information.

I would like very much to know if there is anyone else with similar experiences.  We need to figure this out soon, and do something about it.  This is not an acceptable way to run a school .
